Open Letter - Green Claims Directive: safeguarding credible climate claims while driving demand for permanent carbon removals
Carbon Gap calls on EU negotiators to ensure that the Green Claims Directive enables private investments in permanent carbon removal
Carbon Gap has joined 33 other signatories, including industry and NGOs, in calling on EU negotiators to ensure that the Green Claims Directive clarifies requirements for companies’ climate claims and enables highly-needed private investments in permanent carbon removals.
With up to 10 gigatonnes of CO₂ removal needed globally by 2050, scaling CDR is essential, yet the sector remains nascent and relies on voluntary carbon markets (VCM) for funding. The letter calls for clear rules allowing companies to make compensation claims before reaching net-zero, ensuring permanent emissions are offset with permanent removals, and permitting only high-quality, ex-post carbon credits. These measures will safeguard climate integrity, prevent greenwashing, and drive investment in Europe’s emerging €220B CDR industry, securing its role in achieving net-zero and net-negative emissions.
